About GRWPGreater Richmond Water Polo unofficially began at a Masters swim practice over spring break 2007. During a conversation with the coach, Tim Martin was told someone named Brooks (Landes) wanted to start a Water Polo club in Richmond. After several e-mails and phone calls between Tim and Brooks to swap stories/ideas, the first organizational meeting of the Club took place at The Sports Page Bar and Grill (our unofficial watering hole). In attendance were Brooks and his wife and Will Schooley (current GRWP Board Member and Youth Development Director). Following that meeting the first practice was held at the Midlothian YMCA on May 20, 2007. Attendance was light and consisted of two balls, chairs set up pm their sides as goals and 4 or 5 'old guys'. Practices started out as every other Sunday and soon transitioned to every week. Through word of mouth and the internet we slowly found people. Eventually, and as a result of 'grass roots' campaigning and going from pool to pool to introduce the sport, membership and participation grew to where GRWP now has 30 active members.
Our PurposeGreater Richmond Water Polo exists as an entity for club members get together in the common interest of playing and competing water polo. The club will facilitate playing the sport of water polo, social interaction, and general camaraderie. Greater Richmond Water Polo will be the example for sportsmanship, ambassadorship, and community morals and values. |
